Freight transportation from Iran to Russia: opportunities and services provided by Importo

“Importo” offers a wide range of services around cargo delivery from Iran to Russia. With the growing trade turnover between the two countries, the demand for logistics and delivery services from Iran becomes even more pressing for businesses looking to expand their international trade.

RUSSIA AND IRAN COMMODITIES TURNOVER

The economic relations between Russia and Iran, with their long history, have been on the rise in the recent decades. The cooperation agreements in various fields, including trade, energy and technology, which have recently been signed, contribute to the growth in the bilateral trade. 2023 saw the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Agreement, which came into force on 15.05.2025, provides for a tariff-free trade regime for 87% of the product range and, as a whole, brings about particularly favorable landscape for the two countries’ cooperation. Imports from Iran to Russia have become much more simplified, with plenty of incentives for exports in the opposite direction.

CARGO DELIVERY

“Importo” organizes international logistics chains using all of the available transportation methods. We choose the most optimal route to meet the timelines and for the goods at hand.

MARINE FREIGHT

This is one of the main means of cargo transportation between Iran and Russia. Iran has ports in the Persian Gulf (the largest of which is Bandar Abbas) and on the Caspian Sea (the Amirabad port, the Enzeli port), which allows one to choose the most optimal delivery port into Russia considering the cost, timelines and final destination.

  • from Bandar Abbas to Novorossiysk;
  • from the Iranian ports on the Caspian Sea – to Astrakhan, Makhachkala or Olya followed by river, rail or road transport further throughout the rest of Russia;
  • delivery by road to the port of Jebel Ali in the UAE followed by further sea delivery into Russia.

ROAD TRANSPORTATION

Road transportation from Iran is done via the following two routes:

  • via Armenia;
  • via Azerbaijan.
  • The inherent downside of the road cargo transportation is to do with the large number of transit territories and the time spent at documentation check- ups, as well as the impact of the weather.
    We offer both FTL (full truckload delivery) and LTL (less than full truckload delivery) transportation.

    AIR FREIGHT

    This is the fastest means of transportation available between the two countries. The main departure airport in Iran is the Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, which has direct flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi.

    RAILWAY DELIVERY

    The optimal option for cargo transportation is the International Transport Corridor ITC “North-South”, with its terminal points in St. Petersburg and the port of Bandar Abbas, located on the shores of the Persian Gulf.
    The following are the main logistics routes of the ITC:

    • direct railway Astrakhan – Makhachkala – Samur, passing through Azerbaijan with a connection to the freight railway stations of Iran;
    • direct railway through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan with a connection to the Iranian railway through the railway border crossing Tejen – Serakhs;
    • direct route through Uzen (Kazakhstan) – Kyzylkaya – Bereket – Etrek (Turkmenistan) to Gorgan (Iran).

    This corridor provides rail freight transportation from Iran, and its operation is regulated by international agreements, which streamlines the customs clearance process.
